Wood: Solid basswood. It's a fine, even-grained hardwood, pale cream with the natural knots and mineral streaks left exposed. Those "scars" are intentionally left and not filled (hence the title). Light but sturdy.

Finish: Lacquer on the legs, oil finish on the tabletop — not wax. The oil keeps the top close to raw wood; easy to maintain and re-oil over time.
